Summary

Host Brad Kearns gets deep into the world of ketone supplements with scientist Chris Irvin from Perfect Keto. Chris and Perfect Keto founder Dr. Anthony Gustin recently published a book called The Keto Answers Book, filled with 268 thoughtful answers to the most common questions about the ketogenic diet and ketone supplements. Chris talks about the good and the bad arising from the explosion in popularity of keto, and has an interesting take on the best use of ketone supplements. Chris mentions their effectiveness for times when you need enhanced brain function. You'll hear about possible reasons for lower than expected blood ketone readings and the surprising suggestion that you should not measure ketones first thing in the morning due to something called the "dawn effect," where you have naturally elevated glucose and low ketones upon awakening.

Keto people, I'm so excited to have on Chris Irvin from Perfect Keto live, Austin, Texas, right?

0:36.8

Yes, Austin, Texas. Thanks for having me today. Oh, is it true that Austin has now been named the new center of the universe for all things cool and culturally progressive?

So it's been pretty awesome.

Yeah, I've been going there frequently, for some reason, since 2001, there's all these

weird things that brought me to Austin over the years, including my company had an office there.

I would go, of course, to the shows in recent years and doing some work with Lance Armstrong

way back in the old days. And so I'd find myself there, you know, once or twice a year and just seemed like

the place kept growing and becoming, you know, more lively with like the fitness community is

just mind-blowing when you're going for a run around town lake. And, you know, I've been to Golden Gate

Park in San Francisco where there's, you know,

1:28.4

dozens of runners in every square block. And it's just kind of a cool thing for me being

from places like Auburn, California, where I spent a lot of time training, or right now I'm in

a small area of Lake Tahoe. And so, you know, if you're out there, like, on a hike or a jog and you see a

runner passing by you, you go, hey, how's it going? And then, like, when I do that in Austin,

1:50.4

I'm just nonstop. My mouth gets tired because I'm waving and saying hi to 475 people when I go to a

four-mile run. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, you know, interesting, one of the things that I've
