You are about to listen to a BBC podcast and I'd like to tell you a bit about what goes into making one.

I'm Sadata Sese, an assistant commissioner of podcasts for BBC Sounds.

I pull a lot of levers to support a diverse range of podcasts on all sorts of subjects,

Hello, it's not often you can identify a single year that changed everything,

but culturally speaking, 19 1920 was one such moment.

The BBC was born. T.S. Eliot published his monumental poem The Wasteland, but it's a landmark

novel we're turning to today. James Joyce's famously complex Ulysses, still challenging us

100 years on.

Not that the story itself presents too many difficulties.

On Thursday, the 16th of June 1904, two men make their way around an unusually warm Dublin,

running errands, eating, drinking, debating and daydreaming.

They have several glancing meetings, but it's not until the

evening that they finally encounter one another properly in the basement of a maternity hospital.

They move on to a bar, then a brothel, and wander the city's empty nighttime streets.

The older of the two, an advertising salesman called Leopold Bloom, invites the younger,

a drunk teacher and poet Stephen Deadless, to his home, where Bloom's wife, the singer Molly,
