Summary

I know that I've previously said how enamored I am of the music the Grateful Dead created in the Fall of 1973, specifically during November. Luckily for us, there is an exceptional set that has yet to be released commercially nor here on the Deadpod that I have the privilege of featuring this week. This occurred on November 1, 1973 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

While we only have the second set of this wonderful performance, I think you'll agree it is a much-needed respite from the noise and confusion of the current season. The band reaches peaks of expression here on selections such as 'Playin' In the Band', 'He's Gone' and 'Truckin'. The style is jazz forward and experimental. The fact that Billy is alone on percussion probably allows him to be more supple and driving at times, especially during 'He's Gone'.

I recommend time and space to savor this one, I think you'll find its worth it..

Hello and welcome to DeadPod for the week of November the 4th, 2022.

0:04.0

This professor I'm so glad to be cassette up this week.

0:07.0

This week I decided to bring you an example of some of

0:11.0

grateful dead music that I find most satisfying

0:15.0

comes from November of 1973.

0:19.0

And we've got a second set only

0:22.0

selection for you this week. It's all that exists

0:25.0

from the band's performance on the first of September 1973

0:30.0

at McGraw Memorial Hall in Northwestern University in

0:34.0

Evanston, Illinois. Unfortunately, the second set is the only

0:38.0

existing recording that I know of of this show.

0:41.0

But boy, it sure is a fine recording and a stunning performance.

0:46.0

It starts out with Morning Dew, what a way to start a set, huh?

0:50.0

And Jerry does this beautifully especially.

0:53.0

I find especially the ending of this going into playing in the

0:56.0

band is spectacular. The plan in the band that follows is very

1:00.0

jazzy as much of the music of that period is.

1:03.0

And I really like it. I hope you do as well.

1:07.0

Phil is outstanding on this as is Keith as far as that goes.

1:12.0

It goes into Uncle John's band and then they go into a

1:16.0

play in the band reprise. I think it's the first time they did

1:19.0

the play in the band sandwich like that.
