Imagine being a child and wondering every time you meet someone new if they'll

accept you once they learn something about you that is beyond your control,

that you didn't choose and can't change, but that is fundamental to who you are. Imagine being the mother of that child. What would you do? How

would you keep your child safe, happy, healthy, and whole?

In a world you know isn't quite ready for her.

A world that is often hostile to the very idea of her.

I have no idea how to do this.

But I've had to do this, or at least give it my best shot.

When my daughter was five I explained that some of the other kids

in kindergarten may not know what transgender was and that this was true for

their parents too.

So it might be best to wait before telling them.

Get to know them first.

Let Mama explain to their moms and dads.

Imagine hearing that your own mother thinks the very idea of you will

confuse, shock, and maybe even scare people. Imagine being cautioned to hold part of yourself back from the other kids in kindergarten.

Logistically, keeping things quiet wasn't hard. She transitioned so young at just four years old.
