Summary

Custom scope dials are the fastest, simplest way to make precise shots inside 600 yards. Just range, dial, hold center and shoot. However, ordering a dial with the correct parameters and setting it up on your rifle can feel intimidating. It shouldn't be.

The process is a detailed one, but isn't hard. This episode outlines several steps on how to get it right, and then how to use your custom dial most effectively. Common questions and misconceptions about custom dials are answered and mythbusted, too. ENJOY!

Range, dial, shoot. Using a custom scoped earth that's engraved to match the ballistics of your

0:07.5

rifle, cartridge, and bullet is the simplest and fastest way to shoot out past 300 yards. However, getting set up and

0:16.1

mastering the concept of a dial-up turret can be challenging. So let's dissect the

0:21.5

process. I'm Joseph von Benedict and this is the backentry hunting podcast.

0:27.0

Recently I've gotten a wave of emails and messages asking various questions about custom dials and how to use them.

0:35.0

So many, in fact, that I decided it's time to create a podcast dedicated to the subject.

0:41.0

First, we got to define the problem. What exactly is a custom dial for

0:46.3

your scope's turret and how does it work? A custom dial is a replacement cap for the

0:52.4

dial-up turret on your scope, one that's been engraved

0:55.8

with numbers that represent yards or meters for you metric folks.

1:01.6

Where to engrave those numbers around the circumference of the custom dial is determined

1:06.1

by plugging in the pertinent ballistic numbers, velocity, bullet ballistic coefficient, and so forth, along with rifle setup info, such as

1:16.2

scope height above your bore, and atmospheric data that affect air density, such as altitude and temperature.

1:24.3

Provide the necessary data and the company producing the custom dial will do the rest.

1:29.9

Once you receive your custom dial, you remove the MOA or mill-based dial that came on your scope and install the new custom dial.

1:40.0

It's usually a very simple switch that takes only a minute or two.

1:44.8

With the custom dial installed with a base number, say a two to represent a 200 yards sight

1:50.8

in distance, you're set to begin using it. Assuming your rifle is

1:55.2

indeed properly zeroed at your chosen sight-end distance, you can range any

2:00.2

target down-range, turn the dial to the appropriate number, and hold the crosshairs on the money and fire.

2:07.0

You'll hit the target, assuming you use good shooting technique.

2:11.0

Okay, let's dig deeper.
