Summary

Obergefell v. Hodges was the landmark civil rights case in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have the fundamental right to marry. Jim Obergefell, one of the men at the heart of the case, joins us to talk about why six years later, we still don't have *true* marriage equality. 0:00.0	Today's ruling from the Supreme Court affirms what millions across this country already know to be true in our hearts.
0:07.6	Our love is equal, that the four words etched onto the front of the Supreme Court, equal justice under law, apply to us, too.
0:17.3	That is Jim Obergefell speaking in front of the Supreme Court in 2015 after their historic ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges.
0:26.2	It's my hope that the term gay marriage will soon be a thing of the past, that from this day forward, it will simply be marriage.
0:35.0	And our nation will be better off because of it.
0:38.0	While the landmarks of the rights case rule that same-sex couples in the U.S.
0:42.0	have a fundamental right to marry, as Jim says, we still don't enjoy true marriage equality.
0:48.5	We see our relationships treated as less than by county clerks, by judges, bakers, and adoption agencies.
0:55.7	And that ongoing fight is what Jim has dedicated his life to.
0:59.7	He's now working with the organization, family equality.
1:02.8	They work to advance the legal, lived equality for LGBTQ plus people and their families.
1:08.9	Today, we're going to hear all about that.
1:10.5	But first, we're going to start with Jim and his late partner, John Arthur, for they had a love story that quite literally changed history.

1:35.4	I want to start by going back, back before your life was radically changed the Supreme Court.
1:40.8	Before that, you're with your partner John for 22 years. Can we start with your love story?
1:46.7	How did the two of you meet? It was thanks to a mutual friend. This was before I came out.
1:52.3	My friend Kevin, we were going out for a drink and we went to a bar near the University of Cincinnati
1:57.9	where Kevin and I had both attended, and where John, turns out,
2:01.4	graduated as well. And it wasn't a gay bar. It was just a campus bar, really. So Kevin and I
2:07.6	walked into this bar, and again, I'm still closeted. This is before I quit my job as a high school
2:13.1	German teacher. It's before I went to graduate school. Before I came out. How old were you?
