I want to share three alarming statistics with you.

40% of students cannot read at a basic level.

Almost 70% of low-income fourth grade students cannot read at a basic level.

1.2 million students drop out of high school each year.

That's 7,000 a day or one student every 26 seconds.

Dean Talsen is the first and only person in American history to navigate his way from being functionally illiterate to a master's

degree and graduate Magna Cum Laude in the top 10% of his class.

He was inducted into the National Honor Society

in Chicago, Illinois in May of 2007.
