Summary

How can we balance petitioning God for help while placing our confidence in Him? Today, Emma Dotter is joined by Join The Journey staff member Lauren Atkinson to talk through Psalm 71. David appeals to God’s righteousness and asks for God’s refuge while recounting God’s faithfulness in the past, present and future. This psalm provides a model for how we can pray as we praise God for His character and ask Him to act according to who He is. We know now that David's prayer for salvation and deliverance in God's righteousness is answered fully and finally in Christ.

0:45.9	Glad you're back, Lauren. I know you and I, we've been thinking about helpful Bible reading
0:50.6	principles. We want to keep in mind as we read the Psalms. And I know you had some

0:59.0	What have you been thinking about lately? Yeah, totally. I've been thinking about how when we are
1:04.0	reading any passage in the Bible and especially Psalms, it's really important for us to look at the
1:10.1	context, to be able to figure out who is
1:12.2	writing, what's going on when they're writing. Otherwise, it's almost like you're picking up
1:16.7	in the middle of a conversation and you don't know what's going on. I think especially with
1:20.3	Psalms because so much of it is like prayers to God. And so it's like, why is the psalmist asking
1:26.7	what they're asking? And I was thinking
1:29.1	about this because when I was little, I remember always wanting to know the conversations that my
1:33.9	mom was having with her friends. And so this is before the days of the iPhone back when we had home
1:39.1	phones. Oh, yes. You remember those? Yeah. The home phone, elementary school. And so my mom would be on a call,
