Summary

Sports arenas in cities like Atlanta and Charlotte will be converted on November 3 into polling places, to reduce wait-times while enabling social distancing. It's an effort being led by More Than A Vote, a nonpartisan voting rights group formed by NBA and WNBA players like LeBron James, in the wake of George Floyd's murder. Axios Re:Cap digs in with Renee Montgomery, a point guard for the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream and co-founder of More Than A Vote. We discuss the election, last night's player strike, and why she opted out of this season to focus on issues of social justice.

Walmart is in on TikTok, power is out for hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana,

0:15.0

and we're focused on how empty NBA arenas could help save the November election. Last night, the NBA and WNBA both went

dark, with a slate of six games canceled in a show of player solidarity, or maybe in a show of

there are some reports that the leagues do plan to resume games,

notably LeBron James. This is the group we discussed in the very first episode of Axios Recap,

and the latest is that the group is working with secretaries of state,

1:28.3

local officials, and team owners to use empty arenas as polling places on November 3rd.

1:35.3

That means that in Atlanta, for example, State Farm Arena, which is right downtown,

1:40.3

will be converted into the city's largest ballot box, which should help alleviate wait times

1:45.2

while also allowing for social distancing. The same goes for arenas in Detroit and Charlotte

1:50.6

and Milwaukee, plus several baseball and football stadiums. It's a tangible action to empower

1:56.3

citizens driven by pro athletes, but it's also one that is not without its practical challenges,

2:01.6

namely the need to find enough poll workers, preferably younger poll workers, as so many older ones
