When we were teaching elementary school, Jordan taught fifth grade, I taught fourth grade, the first three

days of school would be on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. And in those three days, we wouldn't teach anything academic. We would spend the entire three days setting expectations and then practicing those expectations over and over and over again.

So what I mean is we would practice lining up

in a single file line and entering the classroom

silently and respectfully, for example.

And the first time we gave this instruction it might not go quite as we expected and so we

would line up and do it again and again until the kids could figure out oh this is what she means when

she means enter the classroom silently and respectfully it would kind of go

something like okay fifth graders we're gonna line up quietly outside Mr.

Demos's room and my expectation is that you're

going to walk into the classroom silently. By silently, I mean nobody is talking to

anyone else. You're not making any loud noises. you're being as quiet as you possibly can.

Nobody is touching anybody else.

You're going to put your backpack on your hook as fast as possible, get to your seat as quickly

as possible, and quietly begin reading your morning book.

So even words like quietly are up to interpretation when you're 10, right?

So those are the types of things that we would practice the first few days of school.
