the eight-year secret war fought during the Vietnam War by Green Berets

across the fence. They are frantically beating me back to consciousness pouring

water over my head. Okay okay I'm back. I try to get up. My legs don't work. From

the knees down my fatigue pants are shredded. I'm bleeding. One of the men

Kwong starts smearing gelatinized rice on my legs. Arms face and chest. Web

gear and what is left of my survival vest are lying on the ground in bloody

tatters along with the car 15. It's bent where the barrel meets the receiver

and the bolt can't be pulled back. Lock orders a scout to bury the car.

As I'm flying through the air instantly I'm looking up into the jungle canopy

seeing a muddled light stream through a haze of cordite. It's over. You saw it

coming and couldn't get out of the way. Lower below me. The constant

concussion lifts me from the ground pushing me through the air. My feet are over

my head. Green tracers crack around me like lady finger

firecrackers. That tree is upside down and moving fast.

This is all wrong. Focus or you'll miss the moment of your death.

I hear myself say I can't breathe. I feel like I'm drowning.
