For each week we explore the lives of drummers.

I want to play something for you. You're hearing seven by Sunny Day Real Estate, featuring my guest William Goldsmith on drums.

Formed in Seattle, the band released its much-beloved debut LP Diary in 1994. William's cathartic, pummeling, yet highly precise drumming,

formed the emotional core of the band and won him a rabid fan base.

Following the band's breakup, William and Sunny Day bassist Nate Mendel were invited by Dave Grohl to join the first incarnation of the Foo Fighters.

William's tenure in that band, however, was short-lived.

Afterwards, William reunited with Sunny Day and formed another project, The Fire Thief.

But over the past few years, William has distanced himself from the world of music and many of his friends.

I spoke to him at his apartment outside of Seattle, where he lives with his wife and family. And now our conversation with William Goldsmith.

So you were born on the 4th of July?

Yeah, yeah.
