I'm Bridget Bergen, in for Brian today.

Like WNYC, Commonweal Magazine is celebrating its centennial.

So in this week before Easter, we thought we'd make the magazine in the larger community of Roman Catholics in America number 85 in our Centennial series, 100 Years of 100 Things.

We're joined by this by the editor of Commonwealth, Dominic Presiosi. Welcome to WNYC and congratulations on your magazine Centennial.

Thanks, Bridget. It's great to be here and congratulations to you all as well.

Well, we thank you very much. Dominic, I know that Commonwealth is independent from the church,

is known for more, you know, of a liberal take on culture and politics. But how do you describe the magazine?

Well, I think that's a pretty fair assumption or summary description of us, Bridget.

I will say that, you know, Commonweal has always sort of, since it's founding in 1924, we've always believed that Catholicism and

American democracy have a lot to say to each other and a lot to offer each other.

One of our writers about 20 years ago believed that, you know, the virtues of democracy

and Catholicism exist in a healthy and fruitful tension.

So yeah, I guess we do sort of speak from

the more liberal end of the spectrum, but traditionally and historically, we've welcomed

voices from the entire spectrum. We think that healthy debate is the best kind of debate,

and we still try to honor that tradition. I was looking at your website earlier.

And, you know, for anyone who's unfamiliar with Common Wheel Magazine, I mean, this is not

purely a magazine that is about, you know, reflections on faith or, you know, you have some pretty interesting pieces. You know,

the one that jumped off the page to me was about the need for deterrence. And it talks about,
