0:00.0 | Brian, welcome to the show. |
0:01.3 | Thank you so much. |
0:02.5 | The elegant universe turns 25 this year, just like me. |
0:08.5 | I wish I could say that about myself. |
0:10.9 | I'd like to get into what's changed where we're at, |
0:13.9 | but I think it's going to require starting with the question |
0:17.3 | that I'm sure you've never been asked before. |
0:19.7 | What is string theory? |
0:20.7 | Yes, good question. |
0:23.1 | There are a number of ways of framing what string theory is about, |
0:26.7 | but perhaps from the largest perspective, |
0:30.4 | it's an attempt to realize a dream that really begins with Albert Einstein, |
0:35.2 | which is this idea that we have a single universe. So we should |
0:40.1 | have a single theoretical explanation for how that universe works. And that single explanation should be |
0:46.8 | mathematical. And so there should be some grand mathematical formula, some mathematical equation |
0:53.0 | that would describe everything in the universe. |
0:57.0 | And Einstein sought this so-called unified theory for decades, but he never found it. |
1:02.9 | And string theory just may be the theory that Einstein was looking for. |
1:09.2 | Now, what kinds of problems is the scientific community faced with that leads them to come up |
1:15.6 | with something like string theory? |
1:16.6 | I mean, we already had a lot of ideas about what the universe was made of, the different |
1:20.6 | constituent particles and stuff. |
