Summary

We’re five episodes into our season one re-watch of Breaking Bad, episode 105 “Gray Matter”. We juxtapose Walt at his most sympathetic as he explains his choice to refuse treatment for his cancer during the powerhouse “Family Meeting” scene, and yet we also see him seemingly throw away his chance to be treated and secure his family’s financial future to preserve his pride. How to reconcile Walt the every man with Walt the egomaniac? Join us as we discuss this and much more, including lots of quality feedback and a spoiler section where we ponder why the Villigan decided to play certain cards so close to his chest that we never actually got to see them on screen. Some links mentioned on the podcast. Beware! These could include spoilers! * Heisenberg Chronicles companion piece for our previous, 104 episode, by Shayne Bowman. * The Seriable.com “Breaking Bad Observation”s for “Gray Matter” * Interview with Jessica Hecht regarding her and Walt’s backstory * Join me and Jim out at the ABQ Breaking Bad Fan Fest!! So what do you think of this episode overall?

1:00.0

Another fairly slow paced episode but I felt like there was a lot of really

1:05.2

challenging scenes. The one and obviously the non-intervention intervention

1:10.7

the family powwow out Scholar put on, was a really early preview of, because we haven't seen a lot from Dean Norris who plays Hank.

1:20.7

We haven't seen a lot from Betsy Brant that plays Marie.

1:25.6

Yeah, yeah. Even Walt Jr. These are five people that really stood and held

1:30.9

their own against Brian Cranston and did a lot of little nuance work a lot of character. I'm sure a lot of

1:36.8

stuff was on the written page but I thought this was really fascinating.

1:40.3

It's not really deeply insightful for I mean I don't that's the thing. There's not a lot of like hidden little details and hidden notes and like foreshadowing but this is building the bones of who is Walter White.

1:54.5

This is the bread and the butter here.

1:56.0

Yeah, why is this man going to make?

1:59.0

This is a very fateful episode.

2:00.4

This is a big pivot point.

2:01.8

Huge, huge.

2:04.0

And it's all predicated.
