Summary

After last week's episode about women teaching theology, a lot of questions came in about "shallow", pink fluff bible study settings.

How do we take them deeper?

Is it possible?

In this episode Phylicia shares some practical ways you can take a "social hour" bible study session to something with real meat.

Welcome to Verity Podcast. I'm your host, Felicia Mason-Himer, and I am here to

0:06.3

teach you how to know what you believe, to live it boldly, and to communicate it

0:11.3

graciously to the world around you. I believe that women are ready to go deeper

0:16.4

in their faith than ever before, and they don't have to go to seminary to do it.

0:21.6

I am so glad you're here, and I hope you'll join me on this journey because

0:26.6

everyone is a theologian. Hello friends, welcome back to Verity Podcast. Okay,

0:33.4

this week's episode is building on some questions I got after last week's

0:38.6

episode. Last week I talked about whether women can teach theology to other

0:43.8

women, and in the course of that episode, I brought up the point that a lot of

0:47.7

women's Bible studies can be really shallow and end up like a social hour, and

0:52.0

this really resonated with a lot of you. You told me that you've experienced

0:56.2

this, and that it's not just a women's problem. This is actually a problem in a

1:00.5

lot of men's studies as well, where men feel unhealthily stereotyped, and as

1:06.6

if the content of these studies is just not scriptural, or at least not ushering

1:11.6

them deeper into their walk with God. So this is clearly a problem that both men

1:15.7

and women face, and I thought, let's do an episode about what to do when you're

1:21.0

in a shallow Bible study. How do you change it? Can you change it? What can you

1:26.1

do about the problems we encounter? So hopefully this episode is practical, but

1:30.4

also biblical, and gives you some ideas for how you can help either change the

1:35.1

Bible study you're in, or start a Bible study that actually studies the Bible.

1:40.5

So before we get to some of the problems in modern Bible studies and how to

1:46.7

solve them, I want to first look at the overarching purpose of the church.
