Summary

Season four of the Ask Lisa podcast kicks off with a special guest, author and journalist Jennifer Breheny Wallace, who discusses her brand new book: “Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic - And What We Can Do About It.” Dr. Lisa, Reena, and Jennie address how achievement pressure harms kids and what parents can do to combat grind culture. They unpack research from Harvard and the London School of Economics to answer key questions: What do the kids who are thriving in high pressure situations do differently? What can adults do to shield kids from toxic stress? How do parents put pressure on kids without even realizing it? Tune in to learn about the "puppy dog principle," why mattering is what really matters, and the one thing that parents can do that makes a difference.  Follow and subscribe to our new YouTube channel where you can see all our latest video episodes.  https://youtube.com/@asklisapodcast And follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn @AskLisaPodcast, @Lisa.Damour, @ReenaNinan. So Lisa, tell me something about your summer that nobody else knows that was

0:57.9

transformative. Oh, I had quite a summer, Vina. I'm so glad to be back here for season four,

1:03.2

but it was a good summer. And I will tell you, this sounds kind of corny, but it's really true and

1:08.8

real. I had the honor of being at the Aspen Ideas Festival this summer, and there were two interactions I had that really felt life-changing. One was with Jason Rosian, who was a Washington Post reporter who was held in an Iranian prison for a year and a half. And I ended up in a long conversation with him about his experience. And then

1:30.1

the other was Kate Bowler, who is a terrific podcaster. I got to be on her podcast. She's a scholar

1:36.0

and a writer and also just like a really fun and wonderful person. And she was diagnosed with

1:42.0

stage four cancer seven years ago when she was 35, like out of nowhere.

1:46.5

And you can't be in close connection with people who have gone through such extraordinary things

1:52.8

and not, I think, feel shifted by it.

1:55.8

And the ramifications for me that the whole rest of the summer and hopefully for as long as I

2:01.9

can hold on to it, I just have the sense of every day like, I am the luckiest person I know.

2:06.5

I am so fortunate to have all my great good luck in the world.

2:09.3

I am so happy and lucky.
