Summary

Hi Friends

Today's show is very personal in that I announce publicly that I've gotten separated from my wife of 23 years. I have kept this close to the vest for a long time as we were trying to work things out then living together while separated until a year ago when I finally decided it was time to get my own place a few minutes away. It has been a really hard road for all of us but I wanted to share this with you so that I could hopefully help others trying to get through their own hard times.

I am not looking for sympathy or support but I am hoping to connect with others who have gone through something similar and come out the other side as well as hopefully helping those who haven't.

I know it's something much different but I am hoping to continue to have these types of conversations with experts who can help us along our journey.

My guest is Rachael Sloane who has a very helpful YouTube page and practice that I hope you will consider checking out.

Rachael is the Founder of Better Beyond Divorce, the most strategic divorce recovery program for men.

Over the last 3 years she has worked with several hundred separated and divorced men.

"I’ve seen first hand the most extreme consequences - how the shame and despair lead divorced men to take their own lives at a rate nine times higher than the national average,  and I’ve also seen how men can set themselves free, by taking back their identity, by owning their purpose and by learning to work effectively with their emotions and their nervous systems… "

Let me know what you think of today's conversation

Okay, here we go.

Hi, everybody. Today I wanted to take a moment to tell you kind of what's been going on with me that I haven't really spoken a lot about, at least not publicly.

0:13.8

As a comedian first on stage, then radio and social media, I've always been as transparent as I can be about my problems and my struggles

0:21.8

because I learned that it help others and it's also formerly good material on stage and now

0:27.5

good content and relatable here on the podcast. I mean, I'm keenly aware of the fact that now

0:34.1

we normalize, we're trying to at least normalize emotional struggle and anxiety and

0:39.7

depression and all the rest of the struggles that we have and that it can sometimes become

0:44.8

kind of a like a trauma porn. People constantly posting on Facebook or Instagram or wherever

0:50.6

about their struggles that they are having. It becomes too much and you you're in a good mood, and you go and see that, especially

0:56.8

someone that you care about, and it's hard.

0:58.7

That being said, I do feel that I've mostly struck the right balance sharing during my

1:04.3

career in hopes that it helps folks learn and relate, and I like to offer solutions about

1:09.5

what works for me and what works for so many

1:11.7

others as much as you have done that so often for me. People have really helped me out

1:18.2

with any number of problems that I'm having in my life. As a stand-up comic, I took my deepest

1:23.6

insecurities and vulnerabilities on stage. I made fun of myself because I knew I wasn't the only guy losing his hairy young age or the smallest kid in school or the

1:31.6

myriad of issues that I struggled with throughout my life that everybody has in their life that

1:36.8

I identified them to get laughs, to connect. In the end, sharing these things made me feel more

1:41.9

comfortable and more confident being me.

1:44.4

I mean, I'm pretty hard to embarrass.

1:46.6

It happens, but not very often.

1:49.2

As a radio host, I learned how much more powerful it was when you had people listening to you every day.
