I had been a cop for ten years and had worked my way up through the ranks. There had been bad days, sure, when the cases and the tragedy of it all it felt to be too

much.

But I lived for my job.

And then one August night, it all went wrong.

It was bitingly hot in London even though it was past midnight.

Darkness had brought no relief from the heat.

It felt more oppressive to me, and it was making it hard to breathe.

Beads of sweat felt sharp on my skin like pinpricks. A headache was building behind my eyes,

and the suspects were nowhere in sight. I was on surveillance in an unmarked car. I was on my own because my partner had called in sick. Just before these shift had started and there was no one else available.

This was not good practice, but budgets had been cut again, and all the spare bodies were stretched

then. There had been a brutal murder in the West End. A riot was spreading south of the river.

I wiped a sweat from my eyes and stared at the warehouse.

One of my informants had told me that it was being used for storing stolen high-end electrical

goods. No arrests would be made tonight. I was there to take photographs that would build a case

against certain individuals that

these snitch had named. I checked the time again. I had been there for more than three hours
