Summary

We are trying something new this week. The show has been broken into three parts for your enjoyment; Netflix binge style. Listen to all the three parts sequentially or pick the subject you want to start with first. Tell us what you think of this experiment.

In the news, Uncle Tim, Spencer, Lauren, Spanny, and Jessica chat about:

Part Three of three episode 190 podcasts:

  • NCAA:
    • Oklahoma of the West Coast: Cal Berkeley, the little brainiac school that could.
    • Why Stanford, the best team on paper, could end up out of the NCAA Championships
    • (3:00) Sonya Meraz (UCLA) was allowed to repeat her beam routine after a fall when the judge reviewed video and saw a camera light during the crash. Do the rules really allow for this?
    • (19:45) Pac12 Network worker walks onto the vault runway during warmups. Jessica loses her mind, demands punishment and firing.
    • Is a gift of a 10 for a career where many 10s were not given ok?
  • Gymternet News (31:00)
    • Test Event horror (33:30):
      • Can Romania make it to the Olympics with star, Larisa Iordache out with a broken finger?!
      • (39:43) Australia loses our beloved Mary-Anne "Mez" Monckton to an ACL injury one day after she was named to the Test Event team.
    • Meldonium, the endurance drug (46:00):
      • A TON of gymnasts tested positive for the newly banned drug Meldonium at Euros in Baku, back in October 2015 before it was banned in January of 2016.
      • We dig deep into the facts vs rumors about its use in gymnastics.
    • Tatiana Nabieva's volunteers to take over for the Rodionovas (we accept!)
    • Giulia Steingruber's "The Hard Way To Success" episode was striking when compared to the conditions shown in this short video on India's Dipa Karmakar.
    • The Washington Post made a major factual error in a story on gymnastics and don't give enough of a crap about their integrity to fix it.
    • (1:04:00)The American roster for Jesolo has been confirmed and you can watch legally for free in the U.S. by using a VPN. Our listeners like Hola and Tunnel Bear.
  • Feedback (01:10:00): listener puts the criticism of Gabby's hair into the context of African-American beauty and criticism of young people living life in the public eye.

think of Mochiano, and the Olympic finals finals in Atlanta and landing on her head on the beam

0:15.3

She didn't get a do-over, but it happened this week at UCLA. So let's first talk about the

0:20.0

ranking, Spencer. Yeah, it's getting kind of interesting because there's only one meat left that for

0:28.0

teams to adjust their rankings before regionals, which is when it matters and people start

0:34.0

getting eliminated and there's some weird things happening particularly oh a

0:40.3

little school called Cal that was like two seconds ago going to be eliminated from like

0:45.0

sports or whatever and now is ranked 11th. Jess what is going on with Cal?

0:51.1

Dude, Cal is like everything that you ever hoped would happen to a gymnastics program and it actually has.

0:59.4

This is, it's so amazing.

1:00.9

They're basically like the Oklahoma of the West Coast.

1:03.4

They were going to be eliminated, they were saved at the last minute, their head coach was asked

1:07.6

to leave, and they got two amazing new coaches with tons of passion who are working miracles and recruiting amazing gymnast of this program.

1:17.6

Like, Cal is a really good school. Everyone should want to go to Cal and they just couldn't

1:22.0

recruit anyone because a gymnastics program was so bad.

1:25.0

They're demonstrating why a school like Stanford needs to seriously question what's going on with the coaching over there because Stanford on paper should have won

1:34.9

NCA is the last three years in row and they can't even make the top session at PAC-12

1:41.2

championships. They, like, Cal is doing innovative, beautiful, unique, lovely gymnastics and they're consistent.

And it's like a fairy tale story come true.
