I taught archaeology at a small university.

This was not a well-paid position, and I did not have tenure,

so it was not secure. I did have my own office, but this was nothing to be proud of.

My office used to be a storage room. It was where the janitor left their mops, buckets, rags,

in bottles of detergent.

I knew this because sometimes the janitor forgot the storage room had been moved.

He would walk into my office, looked surprised when he saw me, and then smile and say sorry.

It was an easy mistake to make.

I told him not to worry about it and then went back to planning lessons, marking papers, and writing

proposals for archaeological projects.

Leading successful projects and writing articles on the findings for publications in academic

journals was the only way that I could see to stop my career from flatlining.

Funding was always tight, though, and I was having no success until I spotted a new opportunity.

I was on a forum for archaeologists, skimming through posts from much more successful colleagues

about their new booker, the exciting discoveries that they had made in exotic locations.
