Summary

I had the immense privilege of interviewing Andy Crouch for a second time! Amongst many, many accomplishments Andy is the author of the new book "The Life We're Looking For: Reclaiming Relationship in a Technological World." In this episode we discussed the promises and consequences of innovation, and how technology has the power to shape our relationships and interactions with one another. Crouch shared his insight on how for the most valuable things in life, there are no digital substitutes. He also touched on the idea that technology gives us simulations of recognition that ultimately aren’t satisfying. Crouch emphasized that so much is at stake in the way we handle technology, and how it is important for us to understand the role of machines and their need for machine-like environments to operate autonomously. He also challenged us to consider doing something harder and better, rather than just relying on technology to make our lives easier. Overall, the interview provided a thought-provoking perspective on the impact of technology on our relationships and the way we live our lives. After listening to this one, you'll be motivated to be a "three-plane person." :) Crouch’s book offers valuable insights and practical steps for reclaiming relationships in a technological world. 0:50.7

I want to hear more about that. So hopefully we could talk about that. I wrote it because I felt like there were some deeper issues behind the questions that I normally get about in a

1:05.0

in a way of technology and I was happy to write the tech wise family but there are also some bigger issues and this book the life we're looking for is about in a way the bigger picture though I hope it also has some practical kind of implications I think it does for the way we live so yeah it was an attempt to put into words why I think so much is at stake in the way we handle technology and where it's going without our changing course.

1:22.8

And then to also give us a picture of how we could change course

1:25.6

and also hope that the course has been changed in the past,

1:28.7

because this book has one foot in the past,

in the Roman Empire, which was its own time of technology and so forth when there

1:34.6

was a kind of renewal movement that took a very different direction and so that

1:38.0

was the idea behind the life we're looking for. Yes and you say that the life we're looking for is someone

1:44.2

looking for us. Yes, this is a that's a big theme. I took this phrase from my friend

1:50.9

Kurt Thompson is an amazing writer and psychiatrist and he says every one of us is

1:55.3

looking for someone looking for us and you walk into a room and what are you looking for

1:59.6

you're looking for someone who's also looking for you and that's also what we're looking for when we
