War and Peace. Are you aware that the original name of this podcast was War? What Is It Good for?

Only people that watch Seinfeld are going to get that reference, but I digress.

Last time we discussed Donvill's invasion into Seneca territory and how it was a Pyrrhic victory,

a victory in his mind, but it ended up being more harm than good.

We talked about how the forts at Niagara and Fronet were decimated by disease and scurvy and blockade

and how a love of a cow brought everything crashing down at Fort Niagara.

Now, I did do a little more research, Caleb, and it turns out that the guy that was leading the fort at the time did die during that year of disease.

So I bet you that cow was gone the next day. We also discussed how the Iroquois

had a huge victory at Lachene and that De Nannville was recalled right before this disaster happened,

but he had no idea that he had been recalled. That's right. When DeNonville became governor

of New France, he had this idea of coming down with an iron fist to strike fear into the aroquois.

So he went on this large campaign, but instead of striking fear, he basically stirred up the Hornets Nest,

and he just incited rage throughout all five nations against New France.

And now he's looking at, he's just had a village destroyed of his, the fur

trade is completely cut off, he's lost hundreds and maybe thousands of men through disease and

war, and it's looking like New France could be in serious trouble, both financially and maybe even

for its very survival. We also mentioned how his plans at peace with the Iroquois were interrupted by other Native

Americans that were trying to throw a wrench into the works.

And so meanwhile, Dononville is making overtures for peace with the Five Nations.

To get this, he gets a big concession.

The Iroquois come to him and they say, all right, here's what we want.
