Summary

It's Oscars season! The Cine-Files hosts John Rocha and Steve Morris continue their exploration of the 2024 Best Picture nominees in their Oscars Best Picture Series with this conversation and review of THE SUBSTANCE. Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, it follows a fading celebrity, Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), who, after being fired by her producer (Dennis Quaid) due to her age, uses a black market drug that creates a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley) with unexpected side effects. It's nominated for five awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress. Fargeat became the ninth woman nominated for directing, as well as making Academy Awards history as the first woman to be nominated for writing and directing a horror film. Don't forget to vote in our First Annual Oscars show by signing up for our Patreon as a free or paying member. Everyone gets to vote and we will announce the winners on our live The Cine-Files Oscars show on March 1st!

How are you, Steve?

0:44.9

I'm good, but I'm concerned that I'm going to be replaced at some point by younger, hotter versions of John Roker and Steve Morris that are going to come in and take over the cinephiles for us at some point. I just

having seen this film, it seems kind of inevitable.

0:58.0

Yeah, but one of those punks know about film anyway.
