Summary

Today on the podcast we chat with Orlando Pride's Julie Doyle. Julie tells us how she recommends players growing and developing as a player by doing something to take you out of your comfort zone: playing with guys, playing up a year or two, showing up alone to a pick up game, etc. She tells us about how one of her teammates was getting on her at practice but once she shifted her mindset she saw that her teammate genuinely wanted to help her. We also loved her advice to treat every time you play as an opportunity!

Hi! Hi! How are you, Julie? I'm good. How are you guys? Good. Thanks for coming on. Of course. Thanks for having me. Where are you right now? I'm in the corner of my room, Pace. This is the only place.

That is decent for a podcast. Are you in Florida right now? Yeah. Nice. Awesome. How are you enjoying it so far? I'm good. Other than I have an ankle sprain that I'm dealing with.

0:45.8

Oh, that's sick. Yeah. You've done that before? Or is this... I'd read it. Last year, it was the other ankle. It was my fourth day of preseason and I sprained it and I was out for like a few months. Wow. That's annoying. What are things that you do to like prevent that from happening? Is there anything specifically to your body that your trainer has you do or you just... I mean, just strengthening exercises and balance.

1:15.8

But you can't really stop like the momentum and like hitting a wall, you know what I mean? Yeah, that's unenough. I'm gonna avoid it while injury. Oh my gosh. That's staying. I'm sorry. It's okay. How are you feeling mentally in terms of just like any injury that happens to you? Like, do you stay positive or are you type of person that gets down on yourself and you have to really work on it? I'm pretty positive. I think because I've been through an ACL injury,

1:45.8

anything is better than that. So I'm like, all right, seven weeks, let's go. I feel we fine. At least there's nothing compared to six months. Exactly. I was just happy that I didn't need surgery, so I'll be good. Other than aside from injuries, how have you enjoyed being a pro so far? This is your second season, right? Yeah, I mean, yeah. No, I was just saying how, how has it been? I mean, totally.

Two different seasons that I've been dealing with you know, last year, all the drama. So that was in my injury, just a bunch of things going on last season and I was like, hating my life to be honest. But then this year, sub came in and like the team environment is so great. Like obviously we haven't gotten the results yet, but I have a feeling that it's gonna click soon and it's just like good vibes of practice and it's just so fun to come to work every day.

2:43.8

There's last year, it wasn't. That's such a nice feeling and such a change. You think that I'm sure the whole team feels that way, right? Like the vibe. 100%. It's so fun now and like, I can't wait for the season. I can't wait to be back.

3:00.8

How has the coach made that environment happen?

3:04.8

It's a good question. He's done a good job. I can't like really say like it's not like as black and white, but I think it's just like his presence and like what he has us do like.

3:17.8

It's just more of a professional environment and like we have fines now and like last year, you could like show up late to a meeting. You could be eating during your meeting. It's just like little things like that. Like we have to be on time.

3:31.8

Like we have to get our treatment. Like there's a lot of things that are expected of us that we're holding each other accountable. So yeah, I don't know, little things like that.

3:41.8

We have double days. We have fitness tests. Like we didn't have any of that before.

3:45.8

Really? That's crazy.

3:47.8

And it's good that those things make it better. Like some people I think younger wise would think, oh, this sounds too.

3:54.8

Obviously, you're a professional, but maybe as a college or younger, they think that would be like stressful and not as fun.

4:00.8

But it's great that in your point of your perspective, like no, that makes the team better because you hold each other accountable to like be the best and be, which is awesome.

4:10.8

I think you've grown as an athlete from college to now, mentally, physically, anything.

4:17.8

Yeah, I mean, everybody has noticed that this season, especially like I've gotten so much stronger. And like that's something growing up. Like people called me marshmallow. They said I like wasn't strong enough.

4:30.8

One coach is like, once you grow up, like you're going to pass by all these players, but like everyone just gives me as like this little scrawny player, which I was.

4:39.8

But like this year, I'm like stiff, barring people, like using my body more and like it just feels good. And I think it's because I trained with boys in the off season.

4:48.8

So I don't know what's paying off. It's nice to hear that and be noticed.

4:53.8

Yeah. Do you think that's really helped you just become an overall more physical player and should player should should female athletes be training with them with the men's side?
