Martinez is a Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist.

Although he's best known as the lead vocalist for the band Chicano Batman,

Bartow recently began a solo career, backed by a new band called The Doves.

I spoke to him last summer before a live performance at Ace Hotel Palm Springs.

My dad worked in a factory for the longest time, Amico, so they were, you know, it's, they made paper plates, styrofoam plates, and my mom worked with them when we were they both like did like

graveyard shift and stuff like that when we were living in an apartment out there

in La Marrada it's like super working class neighborhood suburb and yeah my mom

ended up like doing educational stuff working with kids later on. But yeah.

What kind of music was on in the house when you were a kid?

We listened to a lot of like, man, just everything, bro.

Just from like disco to funk to...

My dad is such an eclectic head.

He came to the States from Mexico when he was about seven.

So, I mean, he saw the yellow submarine in the theaters in 16, 9.
