...you. You're hearing Mess of Wires by Mets, featuring my guest Hayden Menzies on drums.

Formed in 2008, the Toronto-based band has earned a reputation for relentless touring and meticulous, uncompromising

albums. Hayden plays with a sense of controlled bombast. His beats are often as catchy and memorable

as guitar hooks. Aside from his work as a drummer, Hayden is also a visual artist who has designed much of Metz's

artwork. I spoke to him in downtown Los Angeles. And now my conversation with Hayden Menzies.

I grew up mostly in Ottawa. This is about five hours north. I was born in

Winnipeg. My parents are from Brandon, Manitoba, so it's out in the prairies.

They met out there? Yeah, they used to play in a band together out there.

I think my dad played bass in a couple different bands. I believe one of them was called the Cavaliers,

and the one they were in, my mom was a backup singer,

my dad played bass,

and I think they were called Children of Stone.

And they toured the prairies and did, like,

you ever see that movie, Roadhouse,

like Jeff Ealing and stuff?

They did that kind of stop behind, like, chicken wire fence.

Seriously?

Yeah, they were hippie types for a while

they hitchhiked across the prairies to go see zeppelin out and on Vancouver Island a nerd fact
