Summary

For over a thousand years the Tuscarora lived in Central North Carolina.  This week we cover how they arrived there, their culture and the political situations in 1710. We are proud to introduce the Sixth Nation.

Now, it's taken a while.

For the past year, we've been doing the show and people

have been emailing us saying, why are you calling it to five nations? Why aren't you calling it to

six nations? Where's the Tuscarora? And Andrew and I politely sat back and we said, don't worry,

the Tuscarora are coming. We know that there's a sixth nation, but they didn't join until the 1700s.

So now, without further ado, we are finally going to introduce you to the sixth brother of the five nations.

And so let's talk about them.

Okay. Well, originally, the Tuscarora were part of an Iroquoian megastructure of people that lived up in the western New York area.

We mentioned before that there are many other Iroquoian peoples, including the Huron and the neutrals and the Susquehannaque.

And the Cherokee.

And the Cherokee and the Cherokee and the Tuscarora.

The Cherokee and the Tuscarora being the southernokee and the Tuscarora, being the southernmost

Iroquoian peoples that there are in North America at this time. Ethno historians tend to believe,

based on archaeological evidence, that probably around the year 500 is when this migration

from New York started spreading south down into the Appalachian territory.

And that's where the Cherokee and the Tuscarora come from.

And probably by about the year 600, they had fully settled in the area and built communities.
