I had a lot of bad times when I was growing up, and when I left home at the age of 18,

I was determined that things were going to change.

I walked for miles along dirt tracks under a blazing sun until I reached the road, and then I hitchhite to the nearest town.

I had no qualifications, but I was lean and strong, and so I did what a lot of young men like me did. I walked into the recruitment office

and I joined the army. Basic training was pretty much a breeze for me. There was only one

glitch when I was dragged away from a bar brawl by MPs and spent a sleepless night on a concrete

bench in a freezing cold cell.

After completing basic training, I spent six months on guard duty at a base out in the desert,

where the only real danger was an accidentally disturbing a scorpion or a snake.

When I served my first tour of duty in a conflict zone, it was a weird mix of terror

and boredom. There were hours spent in cramped trucks waiting for orders to proceed,

hunkering down in ditches while missiles screamed overhead, engaging the enemy in close combat

and so much more.

The whole experience was a visceral shock to the system.

My next posting was also overseas.

It was a humanitarian mission this time.

Though insurgents hold up in the area did not respect this, and I was caught up in a

number of firefights.

Over the years that followed, I saw plenty more action, and though I never tried to be a hero,

I was recognized for bravery on a number of occasions.
