Summary

You can never have too many ideas for helping struggling students, right? In this episode, you'll get a few more that you may not have tried. My guests are two teachers β€” learning specialist Sarah Riggs Johnson and math teacher Nate Wolkenhauer β€” who share their system of strategies that help all students learn better, a kind of pyramid where the ones at the bottom apply to all students, the middle layers are used with a smaller group, and at the top are strategies that are only needed for a few students. If you teach math or special ed, this one is a must, but even if you don't, you're going to come away with some new ideas for how to help students who struggle β€” even if they don't have an identified learning disability.

This is Jennifer Gonzalez welcoming you to episode 229 of the Cult of Pedagogy podcast.

0:05.9

In this episode we'll be looking at a tiered system of strategies two teachers used together

0:10.9

to provide just the right amount of support to all learners. The most important disclaimer about this episode is that it's not just for math teachers.

0:33.0

The setting in which my guests and I have placed ourselves happens to be a math classroom, but we feel

0:38.9

strongly that teachers of any subject will be able to take the strategies we talk about today

0:44.4

and apply them in their own work.

0:46.9

With that said, here's what we're doing today.

0:49.2

I'm talking with two teachers, Sarah Riggs Johnson, who is a learning and behavioral specialist, and

0:55.5

Nate Wolkenhauer, who teaches middle school math.

0:58.9

You might remember Sarah from episode 173 when she talked about how she collaborates with English

1:04.2

language arts teachers to improve the writing skills of students with

1:08.0

learning differences. Now she's back to talk about how she collaborates with a

1:12.1

math teacher, Nate.

1:14.3

In their working relationships, Sarah and Nate have developed a system of strategies that help

1:18.7

all students learn better, a kind of pyramid where the strategies at the bottom apply to all students, the

1:25.1

middle layers are used with a smaller group, and at the top are strategies that are

1:29.3

only needed for a few students. They've written a blog post on cult of pedagogy that explains what every

1:35.0

tier of this system looks like. If you teach math or special ed, this one is a must, but even if you

1:41.5

don't, you're going to come away with some new ideas for how to help students

1:44.9

who struggle, even if they don't have an identified learning disability.

1:50.0

We had a hard time giving this one a title, and that's because it has so much good stuff

1:54.9

that teachers can learn from.
