As August rolls into September, Julie and I are busy working on projects behind the scenes and making plans for fall.

You know, I have been a homeschooling mom since before my firstborn child reached school age,

but I have to admit that when September rolls around I get back to

school fever in a big way. It's the exhilaration of a fresh start, that joyful surge of energy that accompanies new books, new plans, and a change in the weather.

In the title learning metaphor that my family uses to describe our homeschooling life,

this is when we like to shift to our more structured high-tide learning style.

And our favorite way to embark on that adventure is in the

company of a few well-chosen books. Over the years, our family read-als and read-alongs have expanded my kids' worlds and helped

grow their writing voices. And that is the subject of today's podcast. To grow a writing voice it helps to listen to and learn from a wide
