Summary

We’re talking about Gwyneth Paltrow’s red hot 1998 this week and who better to join us than author and Who? Weekly co-host Bobby Finger?! With a slew of movies to aid her ascendancy, Gwyneth Paltrow wasn’t having a moment in 1998, she was the moment. It all kicked off with the Sundance debut of romcom Sliding Doors, a film that cast Paltrow as a woman whose fate is determined by whether or not she makes the subway. Showing us both what happens if she does or doesn’t make that train, the film made Paltrow a buzzy figure, but itself was usurped as an awards vehicle by Shakespeare in Love.

This week, we talk about the concept of having “a Sliding Doors moment” and how the film is much wilder than we remembered it. We also talk about Bobby’s new book Four Squares, Paltrow’s Oscar season SNL hosting duties, and the film introducing us all to “Thank You” by Dido.

0:19.8	much more so than we've ever really maybe had. We had a file become unavailable to us and
0:29.2	normally when there is a problem with a file We're able to fall back on the Zoom backup track, which has served
0:38.1	us well in the past. However, this particular Zoom conversation was fraught with glitchy spotty choppy audio,
0:49.6	which is probably the fault of my Wi-Fi network,
0:53.6	let's just say that.
0:55.0	And as a result, our backup is
1:00.6	glitchy and squinky and choppy and may not it certainly is not up to our normal standards even
1:11.0	our normal DIY standards of podcasting. standards,
1:13.4	podcasting, but it was a really great conversation. We had a tremendous guest in Bobby Finger,
1:19.9	and we certainly don't want to let that conversation go to waste. I did my level best to get rid of everything that sounds too too bad and keep all the good stuff in there. So if you hear, you know, a chime at any point, it just sort of, that's your indication that I had to cut some stuff out for only audio reasons.
