Canada, which legalized assisted suicide in 2016, and in 2027, they are extending the benefits

of assisted suicide and euthanasia to all people who are mentally ill. There's this immediate

pressure that comes upon them to widen the criteria.

There are 54 MPs already who have declared that the bill isn't wide enough.

And if we think that they are going to go home as soon as it's passed, we're mistaken.

I have known you for a long time in your capacity as a writer, a historian, a contributor to Spiked for many,

many years. But I think most listeners to the podcast will be familiar with you through the

stuff you've been doing for Spiked on the issue of assisted dying, so-called assisted dying,

assisted suicide. Something you've been writing about

with great passion, actually, and you've put forward an incredibly strong humanist case

against assisted dying, and you've been doing that for quite some time, and Spike's been

delighted to host so much of your commentary on that. So I thought for listeners, I would kick off

with a broad question,

which is just to ask you how you got interested in this issue. What is it that piqued your

interest and your concern about this particular issue? Well, it goes way, way back to when I was
