When we left off, King Edmund was waging his war and he hadn't yet won a major victory,

but he hadn't lost either and for now, that would be enough.

You see, by doing this, Edmund had shown himself to be a contender and so after his most

recent battle, Ironside took his remaining men and he marched east, right towards the

heart of Canutes Power Base.

But the accounts are also careful to point out that when he traveled, he stayed to the

north of the Thames.

And that decision has led scholars to believe that mercy of might already have been on Edmund

Side, or at least was quickly coming around to it.

And as he marched, people came to his banner.

The record indicates that his numbers were growing as he moved.

And of course they were.

Rebellions are all about momentum.

And so far, Edmund had been demonstrating that he was on the upswing.

And so people were starting to feel like maybe he might actually win.
