Risk Management: The goal of risk management is to proactively identify safety-related hazards and mitigate the associated risks. Max talks about four fundamental principles of risk management, and then talks about how the word "probably" should be a trigger word that gets you to consider other options when you're flying.

He also talks about Pilot in Command and what it means. He suggests pilots think of it as a verb, meaning the pilot takes action when needed to prevent an incident or accident, and takes responsibility for whatever occurs.

Listeners have questions on starting instrument training, how the difference between magnetic north and true north comes into play when flying a VOR approach with a GPS receiver, and how to safely fuel an aircraft when it's raining.

Hello, and thank you for joining me for episode 38 of the Aviation News Talk podcast.

0:16.0

Coming up in the news, well, last week we told you there was a twist in the city of Santa Monica's effort to undermine

0:21.5

their airport by shortening the runway, and this week we have yet another twist of that story.

0:27.1

And we also told you about the first documented drone-on aircraft mid-air collision. And guess what?

0:32.9

Last week, it happened again, but with a large king air. And this doesn't happen very often, but here's another one of those occasional stories of a pilot in the United States whose flying misdeeds have resulted in prison time.

0:46.3

And finally, if you ever saw the TV show WKRP in the late 1970s and early 1980s, these five words will tell you about a flat being raised at a

0:57.0

festival in Arkansas over one pilot's activities. And those words are, with God is my witness.

1:04.3

And then later we'll be talking about one of my risk management principles that's based on the

1:08.5

word, probably. Welcome to Aviation News Talk, where we talk about the very best of general aviation.

1:14.9

And if you ever wondered what that is, general aviation is all civilian flying except for scheduled

1:19.8

passenger airline service.

1:22.0

I'm Max Truscott.

1:22.9

I'm here to educate and inform you as a pilot or student pilot, and hopefully to have a little

1:26.9

fun in the process by sharing my over 40 years of experience as a certificated pilot, author, and the 2008

National Flight Instructor of the Year, and a specialist in Sears aircraft like the SR 20 and

1:38.1

SR20. Now, last week, in one of our most popular episodes ever, CHP officer and pilot Jan Sears, who was the first

1:46.1

to report the massive California wildfires, told an inspiring story of the work CHP and other

1:51.6

officers on the ground and in the air did to rescue 50 people trapped by flames. If you miss

1:56.7

that episode, you'll want to check out episode 37. Plus, we have so much more coming up,
