Okay, welcome everyone to a new episode of the Jeff Nippard podcast. It's been a while since I've done one of these.

0:05.8

So in this episode, I'm speaking with Dr. Mike Isretel. Now, if you guys have been keeping up with my YouTube channel at all,

0:11.6

you know that I've recently uploaded a video where I speak to five different guests about the topic of how hard we should be training in the gym.

0:19.2

And originally I had just planned to straight up ask them that question, get their answer,

0:23.2

and then kind of compile them for the video.

0:25.4

But I found that the answers that I got were so nuanced and interesting that I just

0:29.6

couldn't help but ask some follow-up questions.

0:32.5

And what was originally meant to be got a five-minute phone call in each case,

0:36.9

ended up taking about 30 to 60

0:39.0

minutes. And there was just so much good information that wasn't at all redundant across all of

0:47.2

these conversations that I thought, I think it would really be doing a disservice to my audience

0:52.1

to only upload the snippets that I put on YouTube.

0:55.0

And so what I decided was it'd probably be best if I uploaded the full length on edited conversations here on my podcast.

1:01.0

So this is going to be the first of five discussions that I'll have with five different guests about how hard we should train in the gym.

1:09.0

But as you'll see, our conversations aren't really

1:11.5

limited to that topic. We do get a little bit off track in the sense that we also talk about

1:16.0

training volume. We talk about the sort of volume versus intensity debate, what it really means to

1:21.3

train hard. Like should we look at that on a per set basis? Like how close should we take each set

1:27.2

in terms of proximity to failure? Or should we take each set in terms of proximity to failure?

1:29.1

Or should we look at this in terms of like how hard is a training session in general and how

1:34.0

hard should training sessions be? What does it mean to go too hard in the gym and how does all

1:38.5

of that interact with recovery? As you'll see, I think the conversations were really interesting,
