Summary

Trigger Warning: This episode contains descriptions of child sexual abuse. Listener discretion advised.

We continue our important conversation with Stephen Mills, author of the memoir “Chosen”, which recounts in excruciating detail the sexual abuse he endured as a child at the hands of a beloved camp director of a prestigious Jewish summer camp. Stephen describes the dissociation he experienced as he tried to cope with what was happening to him.

Perhaps even more shocking than the descriptions of the abuse, is Stephen’s recounting of his enormous effort to bring this offender to justice, after realizing that this man had potentially abused hundreds of young boys across several states. Stephen’s story involves the FBI, and numerous law enforcement departments in New York, Connecticut, Illinois and Pennsylvania….you will not believe this journey for justice.

If you or someone you know is being abused please reach out to RAINN

And tell us a little bit more about your background. You have a lot of other credits to your name there, don't you?

0:57.0

Well, I've for the last 40 years I've been working as a consultant for public interest advocacy groups in the Environmental Movement,

1:08.0

Human Rights Mostly, and I've written for them, advised them and really focused my professional life on making the world a better place, hopefully, especially when it comes to human rights and the environment.

1:23.0

And importantly being a child advocate.

1:27.0

Well, yeah, that's a recent chapter in this and coming out of the book, I'm spending a lot of time on an ambassador for Child USA.

1:46.0

And that's a really important part. I sit here as a boy mum, I have a 19-month-old toddler.

1:52.0

Part of me is just reacting on that level of hearing what you said about what your body and mind was screaming at you when you're lying next to this man who's an adult and everything in your body, your fiber, your cells is trying to protect you.

2:10.0

And I'm thinking as a mum, how do we make sure that when boys have that reaction, you know, and girls, that they have a voice, they have a place to go to where they feel safe enough to explain what's happening.

2:23.0

It's not just about resilience, it's about everything about what you experience was saying this is wrong, but where do you go with that?

2:30.0

Perhaps we'll get into the prevention and protection messages later on, but I'm reacting first of all as a mum listening to you and wanting to make the world a better place too.

2:41.0

I'm an advocate and speak for victims, but children don't often have a voice. And what strikes me about you and Jim, your experiences is that as boys, you just had nowhere to go.

2:53.0

You didn't have the language, you didn't have the words and you felt most likely you would never be believed anyway if you did have that language because of these individuals who were just trusted implicitly because of their positions of power.

3:07.0

Yeah, that's incredibly important. I'm so glad you mentioned that because and I could jump right in there, Laura to day two in that, as I call it a hostage.
