On January 12, 1985, 18-year-old Krista Pike persuaded 19-year-old Colleen Slemer into taking a walk to the woods to smoke pot.

Krista's boyfriend, 17-year-old to Darrell's ship, and their friend, 18-year-old Shadola Peterson,

were part of a group heading out to the woods.

These young adults met at the Knoxville Job Corps Center.

Job Corps was a government program for low-income young adults to receive hands-on technical training for a multitude of careers. It also helped students attain their high school

diploma or GED if they didn't have one. Colleen, Krista, Tadarrel, and Shadoa signed out of their

dormitory and were seen walking away around 8 p.m.

At 10.15 that night, Krista to Darrell and Shadola returned to their dorm, but Colleen was not with the group.

On January 13, 1995, just after 8 a.m., an employee on the University of Tennessee

Agriculture campus found what he thought was a dead animal close to some greenhouses.

The area was quite isolated, and there was an abandoned steam plant close by.

Upon closer inspection, the employee realized that the animal was a partially nude female body

that was in rough shape.

She had been beaten and appeared to have sustained slash wounds all over her body.

Law enforcement were immediately called.

Both the University and the Knoxville Police Departments responded and secured the area around the body. The deceased woman was face down, topless, and was caked with blood and dirt.
