So we're talking 1115 AM on Friday, February 25th, and what are we going to be covering today?

Well, Roman, are you familiar with the graphic novel, Mouse?

I am.

Very familiar.

Yeah, I love it.

It's a graphic novel by Art Speegleman written in two parts about the Holocaust.

And I'm sure as you know, it's a story of Speegleman's parents who were sent to Auschwitz,

but did survive the Holocaust.

Now, what made this book so gripping for millions of people is that Speegleman turned the experiences

of his parents into a comic book format.

And remember when it was first published in 1986, the format felt so different and new.

The Nazis are cats, the Jews are mice, and Auschwitz have sometimes referred to as mousewits,

but the horrors are still the same.

But it was that combination, mouse's gripping subject matter with its comic book storytelling

that drew international attention.

And in 1992, Speegleman won a special Pulitzer Prize for his two volumes.

We shouldn't be surprised that you can find mouse as a part of many classroom discussions

all around the country.

But on January 10th, the MacMinn County Tennessee Board of Education met to discuss the eighth

grade language curriculum.

And the director of MacMinn County Schools raised the meetings for subject.

He said, there is some rough objectionable language in this book, that book was mouse.
