Summary

Deborah and her husband lost everything but their lives and each other when Hurricane Helene washed away their house a few weeks ago. Deborah’s experience of this “emergence” is framed by her experiences as a Zen Buddhist monk, teacher, and author. I greatly appreciate her trust in sharing her thoughts and insights — even while still immersed in the rawness of her grief and shock at almost being swept away with her home and everything in it. Listen to her explain what it’s like to find diamonds in the wreckage.

0:38.9	She was on, I'm about to tell you, episode 543. She's a Zen teacher. She's an author. Her last

1:00.5	She's a Zen monk and she's a very interesting woman, but the reason I had her on the podcast again the immediate reason is that a few weeks ago
1:07.2	Hurricane Helene wiped out big chunks of the southeast,
1:15.0	including, as it turns out,
1:18.0	the little area where Deborah,
1:22.0	she also goes by Eden I believe, where she was living with her husband and
1:29.2	their house got swept away, crushed, broken, swept away, destroyed. And her brother,
1:39.7	Deborah's brother, Danny, who lives in Topanga, who I don't think I've ever met in person, but we
1:46.5	correspond sometimes.
1:48.8	And he wrote to me and he said, hey, you know, my sister, who you've had on the podcast, I didn't know at that point that that was his sister, but in any case, her house just got wiped out.
2:02.0	She lived through an incredible thing and I think she'd
2:05.2	be willing to talk about it if you'd like to have her on the podcast and of
2:09.7	course my initial reaction was like I don't want to intrude on someone who's just you
2:16.8	know going through this incredible trauma I don't I don't want to you know be an imposition just to get a podcast episode out of it.
2:28.0	But Danny wrote to her and then wrote back to me.
2:33.3	And he was like, no, she's into it.
