Summary

2021 - What a year!

....but hat has it taught us?

It's been an interesting year to say the least, but in this annual roundup, co-host Tom looks away from the main headlines, the news, and the politics that have taken up so much of the world's attention, and instead looks to the three things he's going to be taking away from 2021 and applying to the future.

He covers:

1. The most important finding from scientific research this year
2. How Tom has had an Ah-HA moment that he will take into 2022
3. And a coaching tip that could help you get more PRs in 2022

Some of the best lessons come from self reflection, and we know you’re going to take something away from the last of Tom’s appearances this year - we hope you enjoy it!

Hello and welcome back to Ben Coomba Radio. You're here again with me Tom for another solo

0:07.4

show. This is the fourth show that I've headed up so far and whether you like it or not,

0:12.6

this is going to be the last one. I hope that is not terrible news, but you will be with

0:17.5

Ben next week. He's got a really cool show lined up for you guys, so definitely check

0:20.8

that out. For now, however, you're here with me. And Ben has asked me today to do a little

0:26.3

round up, just sort of some of the things that I think I've taken away from 2021 that I'll be

0:32.0

using in 2022 forward. And so you can kind of think of this as like the most important things

0:37.5

in my mind that I've learned this year. And I've got three things that I've learned, one from

0:41.3

research, one from my own personal reflections, and then one from coaching. So I'm sure there's

0:46.0

going to be something in here that's going to be useful for you. The first one I want to talk about

0:50.9

is what I consider to be like a really, really important research finding that I do want to

0:57.2

just re-highlight. We spoke about it already, but it's this paper that came out a couple of

1:01.4

months ago by Herman Punter and colleagues entitled Daily Energy Expenditure Through the Human Life

1:06.3

Course. Now, this is the paper if you are a bit hazy or if you've never heard about it, what they

1:11.4

basically did is they compiled a bunch of doubly labeled water research. Now doubly labeled water

1:18.0

is like a fancy kind of water that has special molecules in them. And what this, what all of this

1:23.5

basically means is that you drink the water and then researchers can measure how much of this

1:28.5

special molecule leaves your body and in so doing they can almost precisely measure your metabolic

1:35.1

rate. Now, of course, it's way more complex than that, but that's all you basically need to know.

1:39.1

It's an objective measure of your metabolic rate. And by compiling the findings from many, many

1:44.8

different labs around the world, they came up with this really big data set and in analyzing this

1:49.8

data set, they came up with some pretty cool findings. Basically, what they found was that at age 1,
