Summary

Most of us will never undergo professional training in the world of improve and yet we engage in improv almost every day because life is improv - so why should you consider taking an improv class, how does improv relate to self-development, and how can an improv mindset help you to relax in social situations? What to Listen For How do you compete in a place like Hollywood with people who claim to be or do things that they don’t even do? How should you approach a conversation with someone you look up to when meeting for the first time and why is it such a bad idea to be a fanboy/girl in such a situation? What should your mindset be when first meeting someone and what mindset will likely lead to an undesirable outcome? What is the value in learning improv and how does it relate to your path of self-development? Why is it counterproductive to try to be funny in improv? What signs of codependency can you look for early on in a relationship and what can you do to course correct at that point? How can a relationship become codependent and what can you do to prevent it? How do you make people want to be around you or simply notice you? What can you do to make a great first impression? How can you fix a bad first impression? What can you do to be confident without coming across as arrogant? How do you attract people who want the same things you want out of a fling or relationship? Improvisational comedy (aka “improv”) is all about going with the flow, and when it comes to life, it is much easier to use the flow of a river to your advantage rather than trying to swim upstream or control the path of the river itself. And this idea applies directly to the conversations we have with people, especially when first meeting someone. Many of you will want to control the direction of a conversation and make sure you are able to highlight the good things about you and what you’ve done, rather than listen to what the other person says and allow the conversation to flow naturally by asking sincere questions and relating to what they’re saying without domineering the discussion itself. We're going to wrap up this month with the Q&A episode where we dig into our mailbox and answer your questions that you've sent in and to help us we have none other than Aaron Rosski with us.

0:43.6

Aaron's a writer and actor as well as a coach here at the Articharm so many of you will maybe remember a show that we did a little while back while on improv.

0:54.3

You may notice her from our free challenge group our YouTube channel and of course if you've gone through bootcamp she's one of the coaches you've worked with in our video training.

1:02.8

We did interview with Aaron about a year ago where we talked about the power of improv and why working on your sense of humor is such an integral part of our bootcamp training.

1:12.2

Well a lot has changed since our last show so it's time to bring her back and answer your questions.

1:29.2

Welcome to the show Aaron Rosski.

1:31.2

Thank you that was very formal like that.

1:35.2

Now apart from all the work you do with us at the Articharm you also are very active in the entertainment industry and going along with that obviously we know that putting yourself out there certainly not easy especially in a creative realm.

1:51.2

Now you were a finalist on the latest Austin film festival and three of the scripts that you wrote are currently making their way through the page international screenwriting awards.

2:01.2

So when it comes to screenwriting obviously it is competitive especially here in Hollywood.

2:07.2

So how do you deal with comparing yourself to others and the pressure that comes along with such a competitive environment.

2:13.2

It's interesting because outside of other creative pursuits like Johnny can attest to this with music you can't say you're a bass player in a band if you don't know how to play the bass but with acting and writing and being in LA.

2:30.2

So many people out here say they're an actor or a writer and I'll say to them oh what are you working on what have you written.

2:38.2

Well I have this idea for this thing right so when you're out here the competition is not even just I'm competing against other actors and writers who are very talented.

2:49.2

But you're also competing against people who just say they do a thing that they don't actually do and sometimes it can be disheartening because it's so I mean this town is flooded with people who say they do something but they don't actually do that thing and I'm not saying you have to be the best at it but you have to actually start the doing of the thing.

3:08.2

So I guess the way that I kind of deal with the competitive environment is try to just get better by training constantly so whether that's taking classes writing another script letting people read them and give me their honest thoughts you know that's all what's going to make you better and getting really really laser focused on what you do well in those things acting and writing are broad subjects so you know specifically I write comedy especially.

3:37.2

sitcom 30 you know 30 minute network sitcom is my like you know that's where I feel like I really excel and then with acting I'm usually either a kooky sidekick or I play a bitch.

3:52.2

Those are my two go to things and you start to just like learn where you're where your niche is.

3:58.2

So along with that I certainly have met a number of people out here who their director their writer their producer their everything and it's like well you know what's form is your script and I was it out how do you present is like it's all up here yeah I front of the right guy and I'm going to let him have it.
