Martha Ann Johnson, born in 1955, was just 22 years old and on her third marriage.

The first saw the birth of her daughter in 1971.

The second brought the birth of her son in 1975 and her third to a man named Earl Bowen produced both a son

born in 1979 and a daughter born in 1980. A native of Georgia living in Clayton County,

this newest marriage wasn't all that she dreamed it would be, and the pair found themselves bitterly

fighting almost daily. Earl often walked out to cool his temper, but no matter what, they

always seemed to patch things up and move on. But eventually, it all became too much for Martha,

and it was her children that would end up suffering.

On September 23rd, 1977, Martha rushed her second child to the hospital and said that when she went to wake up 23-month-old James William Taylor from his nap, she found him completely unresponsive.

Though he was around two years old at the time, James' cause of death was determined to be sudden infant death syndrome, SIDS, and his file was officially closed. Earl, who was out of the

house on one of his cooling off periods, came back home to
