Summary

This week’s episode of “Jesuitical” features a conversation with Brian Strassburger, S.J., a Jesuit priest who serves as the director of Del Camino Jesuit Border Ministries in the Diocese of Brownsville, Tex., and a co-host of the Jesuit Border Podcast. In his ministry, Brian not only celebrates Mass in migrant shelters and camps at the U.S.-Mexico border, but he and his team also provide basic orientation and advocacy for migrants navigating the complex U.S. immigration system. Zac, Ashley and Brian discuss:  - What the election of Donald J. Trump might mean for migrants and his border ministry - How Brian talks to Catholics who are concerned about chaos at the border and want to see greater immigration restrictions - Brian’s vision of heaven: one where the poor and migrants are welcomed and honored, rather than dismissed and betrayed Links for further reading:  The Betrayal of American Border Policy  The Jesuit Border Podcast  Del Camino Jesuit Border Ministries  Donald Trump’s election has brought new fear to immigrant communities As U.S. Catholic bishops meet, Trump looms over their work on abortion and immigration You can follow us on X and on Instagram @jesuiticalshow.   You can find us on Facebook at facebook.com/groups/jesuitical.  Please consider supporting Jesuitical by becoming a digital subscriber to America Media at americamagazine.org/subscribe Learn more about your ad choices. Hello and welcome to Jesuitical, a podcast from America Media for Saints and Sinners.

1:12.0

You can join us each week for honest conversations about the Catholic Church in our world today, sometimes over drinks. I'm Ashley McInliss, and I'm joined by Zach Davis. Hey, it's good to be with you. Ashley. I'm really excited to share this conversation with our listeners. Yeah, it's with the Jesuit priest, Brian Strasberger. He's the director of Del Camino Jesuit Border Ministries in Brownsville, Texas. And he also hosts the Jesuit Border podcast. And we spoke with Brian just a couple days after the election of Donald Trump.

1:19.1

So obviously a really timely conversation to have with someone who's working at the border, working with

1:24.0

migrants who want to come and cross from Mexico and people who are already here

1:28.1

trying to work their way through a very complicated system. So Brian is someone who's deeply

1:34.5

entwined in this world and concerned about what's coming next. Yeah. And you might have seen

1:38.8

Brian's work profiled in a really great long article in The New Yorker earlier this year. We'll be sure to link to that

1:45.3

in our show notes. But, you know, we've known Brian for a long time and we finally like, this is

1:50.1

the perfect time to have him on the show. And I want to thank Brian especially because he gave

1:53.8

us an incredible drink recommendation, which I feel compelled to share with our listeners.

1:58.3

So he calls it the Brownsville Brandy Sprite. So he made this up when he

2:02.3

moved to Brownsville and he says it's basically a poor man's version of a brandy old fashion. So

2:07.8

you've got your typical bidders that go in there. Brandy, he says any brandy works. And also Sprite.

2:14.8

He says he uses Sprite zero because he's watching those calories, but any Sprite will do. So fill up your glass with ice, throw in a couple dashes of those bitters, shot or two of brandy, and then you just top it off with a Sprite. So pretty simple, pretty easy, pretty great. Good name. It's what I'm looking for for a drink recommendation from a guest.
