Kimberly Cruz was a child abuse counselor working in the Wake County Medical Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

When, on August 8, 1990, she phoned her husband just before 6 p.m. asking if he needed anything before

she headed home for the day. Shortly after, around 602, a co-worker came out into the parking lot and saw an abandoned

umbrella collecting rain, Kimberly's umbrella.

Meanwhile, in the laundry room of the same medical center, an employee named Mikhail Earle

Sexton, who had not been seen since 3.30 p.m., came running in through the back ramp

saying, I got to go, I got to go. I was out there fixing my lady's car, and that was the only

thing I was out there doing. He quickly clocked out and left. It was 6.30 p.m. When 8 p.m. came and

went, and Kimberly failed to come home, her husband began to worry

and called 911. They told him to call the local hospitals to see if she'd gotten into an accident.

He did and got no information. He called 911 again and this time they took a statement, asked

what routes she usually traveled home, and sent officers

to check them out. Nothing. Then, shortly after midnight, a detective happened upon Kimberly's

minivan about 200 yards from the parking lot where her umbrella lay abandoned. He shined his flashlight

inside and saw Kimberly's nude body laying in the back seat.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Kimberly had been raped prior to being strangled to death.
