Tom and Jackie Hawks were living the retirement dream of sailing the Pacific on their own yacht,

but with grandkids on the way, it was time to sell their floating paradise and bring their journey ashore.

What should have been the end of one chapter and the start of another led them straight into treacherous waters.

This is Monsters. Tom and Jackie Hawks had the kind of love story that made you believe in soulmates.

They met in the late 1980s at a chilly cookoff and hit it off right away.

Tom was an ex-military firefighter and retired probation officer with two young sons from a previous

marriage. Jackie's first husband had died in a motorcycle accident that had left her with injuries

which required her to use a wheelchair,

but Jackie's physical limitations never bothered Tom. Instead, he saw her for the vibrant and

adventurous person she was. Jackie and Tom fell in love hard and fast. Her injuries meant she

couldn't have children, so she treated Tom's sons, Ryan and Matt, like they were her own.

In time, they started calling her mom and they took pride of place at Tom and Jackie's wedding in 1989.

By then, Jackie had recovered enough from her injuries to ever regain her independence.

The couple decided that life was something to be

fully lived. You never really know what's around the corner and they didn't want to waste a single

moment. In 2002, after years of hard work, they sold their home and bought a 55-foot yacht named

well-deserved. The name couldn't have been more fitting. They had both worked

tirelessly to build a life together, and now they were going to enjoy every second of it.

Prior to moving on to the yacht, Tom and Jackie lived in Prescott, which is located at the northern

edge of the Bradshaw Mountains, 90 miles or 144 kilometers out of Phoenix

in Arizona. Given that the nearest ocean is more than 350 miles or 560 kilometers away,
