There was an audacious cyber operation that snared some of the country's brightest minds

in its web.

E-mails sent to thousands of college professors in the United States, purportedly from overseas

academics, lavishly praised their research, complete with links to articles of mutual interest.

Only the links were fake, embedded with malware, that exposed their email accounts to what

federal prosecutors last year called one of the largest state-sponsored hacking campaigns

ever prosecuted by the Department of Justice.

But it wasn't the Russians or the Chinese who pulled this off.

It was the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, an all-powerful arm of the Iranian government

with its own army, navy, air force, and military, as well as lucrative business interests

and a covert action arm that has for years been relentlessly targeting the United States.
