Summary

On January 17, 2014, Sister Eli decided not to go to a party because she was too pregnant. Three years later, she was taking a plea deal for something she hadn't done that night—to avoid a three-to-ten year prison sentence. This is the story of how the criminal justice system can come crashing down on an innocent woman like a wave and make it very hard for her to come up for air. Big thanks to Sister Eli, Somil Trivedi, and Diana McHugh at the Women’s Prison Association for making this episode possible! Hello, hello, hello. Welcome to Criminal Brods, a podcast about wild women on the wrong side of the law.

As you know, the subtitle of this podcast is somewhat tongue in cheek.

0:32.0

We do not always talk about women on the wrong side of the law.

0:35.0

Sometimes we talk about women on the right side of the law and today we're going to talk about a woman who got tangled up in the law.

0:41.0

And I would venture to say that the person, the thing that was wrong in this instance was not the woman but was the law itself.

0:51.0

So you guys, this podcast often focuses on really extreme crimes that are outliers, right?

1:01.0

Like the front page stuff, serial killers, conwomen, Casey Anthony.

1:06.0

But that's not really an accurate representation of what the criminal justice system looks like today or has ever looked like.

1:15.0

Criminal justice system has never been packed with serial killers. I hope you know that.

1:20.0

Most of the women who are moving through the criminal justice system are not serial killers and they certainly aren't Casey Anthony.

1:28.0

And there are a lot of them, a lot of women moving through the criminal justice system.

1:33.0

Today, there are more women than ever moving through the system.

1:37.0

Let me just tell you some quick stats between 1980 and 2019.

1:42.0

The number of women who were incarcerated rose by more than 700%.

1:48.0

Okay. So in 1980, there were just over 26,000 women locked up in the country.

1:54.0

26,000 women.

1:56.0

In 2019, there were over 222,000 women locked up.
