Summary

What makes the Big Bang theory so successful? How were alternatives ruled out? What are the electric universe and steady state theories? Do any other options remain, like conformal cyclic cosmology? I discuss these questions and more in today’s Ask a Spaceman!

I think that the Big Bang theory is pretty awesome.

0:13.5

No, I'm not talking about the long-running sitcom.

0:17.4

I actually didn't watch too much of it, and I did watch I thought was okay, I guess,

0:22.8

but anyway, I mean the actual theory of the universe, its histories, its origins, the cosmological,

0:29.6

Big Bang Theory. And the Big Bang Theory is the theory, the MVP, the gold medalist, the reigning

0:36.6

champion, the sole surviving explanation for how our universe works on the biggest spatial scales and the longest temporal scales.

0:45.4

It's it. And the Big Bang theory didn't just come about because a bunch of scientists were bored a hundred years ago and wanted to make a nice

0:54.3

sounding theory.

0:55.2

You know, science is argumentative.

0:57.7

Science is debated.

0:59.5

Science is contentious.

1:01.1

Sometimes science is even dirty.

1:04.4

Theories advance to the front and become successful not by making great sweeps of insight, but by simply surviving. At any one time,

1:15.6

there are multiple theories. And this doesn't just apply to cosmology in the big main theory,

1:21.2

any field of science, at any point of time. Whenever there is some sort of mystery, there are multiple theories out there.

1:30.6

And all of the theories are interesting and creative and feature leaps of reason and insight

1:39.6

and imagination and are powerful and are trying to explain something really funky going on in our

1:47.0

universe, whether it is the largest observations in cosmology that we can possibly make,

1:54.0

or something you might see under the microscope. There are always multiple theories.

1:59.8

There are more theories than there are scientists, because if you leave a theorist alone for

2:05.8

long enough, they will generate more than one idea, I guarantee it.

2:10.6

And so there are all these theories swimming out there, and what they face is the evidence. And usually what happens is that there is some
