Summary

Are dark photons as sinister as they sound? What did the curvaton do in the early universe? And is everything really made of preons? I discuss these questions and more in today’s Ask a Spaceman!

We've heard of all the usual.

0:03.9

Electrons, protons, protons, quarks, neutrinos, and if you're a fan of this show, then you've also heard of some of the other rarer particles.

0:12.6

You know, the wimps, the tachions, the monopoles, the whole family of super symmetric partners, the selectrons, the squarks, and yes, even the

0:22.9

we know bosons.

0:25.2

But that's not enough to satisfy your curiosity, is it?

0:30.1

Like a collector of rare and priceless artifacts, you feel compelled to go just a little

0:34.7

bit deeper, a little bit...weirder. I understand that desire, and I

0:40.1

am here to help. So come over here. I've got something to show you. Five of the weirdest,

0:46.7

strangest, rarest, most hypothetical particles in the universe. These particles are so rare,

0:52.8

we're not even sure they even exist. And I think

0:56.7

you're going to like them. I have to give my usual disclaimer whenever I give a list of things.

1:01.8

These are presented in no particular order. So feel free to rank them by whatever criteria

1:07.4

you prefer. You know, interestingness, cheerfulness, propensity for potential cheese

1:12.1

making and so on.

1:14.0

But let's get started.

1:16.1

Number one is the dark photon.

1:19.6

Everybody loves the photon.

1:21.1

You know, it gets along with so many particles, it has infinite range, it makes flashlights

1:26.7

work, but it may not be the only kind of photon out there. It has infinite range. It makes flashlights work.

1:31.1

But it may not be the only kind of photon out there.

1:34.0

And that's why we think there might be the dark photon,

1:37.2

which is like the regular photon, but dark.
